how on EARTH does on come up with a title for one's dissertation?

i've got a draft written and submitted to advisor-dearest for the latest round of comments. everything is formatted. there's nothing to do right now but the tiny things. e.g. the title page still has a place holder "DISSERTATION TITLE" at the top and i am suddenly paralized with trying to sum up my entire 100+ page document in one line. is there a HOWTO manual on this?

meanwhile, i can't concentrate on ANYTHING because i just got an offer to the may a-100 foreign service class! whoo! i've accepted, which means that in 7 weeks, i will be dr. borogoves, foreign service officer. and even cooler than that? i will be drawing a S A L A R Y. i don't know what to do with myself.

current quandry, relating to both my education and my future career. Penn's graduation is on a monday. which i've always thought was a stupid idea. monday may 15, when i will presumably be in class in DC. i know it's kind of stupid to want to walk at your phd graduation, but i do. i want to wear the robe with the velvet arm stripes, the long red and blue hood, and the funny hat. i've been anticipating this for so. many. years. but do i defer my FS start date for 2 months just to walk at my graduation? do i give up 2 months salary for one day? is that fair to karl, who has been supporting me financially for 3 years? ugh, i don't know. objectively, it doesn't seem that important. and it's possible that i'll be able to take that day off anyway, depending on the schedule and the scheduling guy's mood, so i might be able to do both. feh.

and then, i feel silly for even considering this to be a problem. other people have much bigger problems. on this day, i'm particularly thinking of the family and friends of the foreign service officer and his driver, an embassy employee, who were killed in karachi, pakistan yesterday.
