settling in
just after i got back from The Roadtrip, i moved to my new apartment. my first place ever where i've lived all by myself.
snafus abound: the electric co. folks came by to turn on the power, but somehow managed to turn on the power to another apt in the building. duh. and when i called to complain, they insisted that the very first appointment to come back out and fix the problem was 8 days later. grrrr. so i was without power for a week. that includes, of course, lights, refridgeration, etc. i did, thankfully, have water, since that's included in the rent. was also without cooking gas (though that's my fault, since i didn't call to get it turned on before i left on The Roadtrip).
finally, a week later, they came back and turned on the power. i was very excited to have refridgeration, because i had been living on peanut butter sandwiches and pretzels (non-perishable, you know). 'cept turns out that my fridge is broken. broken, that is, in the sense that it blows warm, rather than cold, air. urg. landlord dropped off a mini-fridge, but it's (a) small, (b) without a freezer, and (c) unable to actually close all the way. landlord claims the new fridge will be here on wednesday (i can hope anyway).
classes have started at school again. i'm taking computational linguistics, with the hope that i will gain some marketable skills that will allow me to get a kick ass job in nlp (natural language processing) when i'm done here. we're going to be using the programming language python, which i have never heard of before this, but am amused at, since the writers use python-esque (monty, that is) terms for their junk variables (e.g. 'spam' rather than 'foo').
and speaking of classes, i haven't done any of the reading for any of my classes yet, so i best get offline and hit the books. plus, i'm out of clean underwear and really better do some laundry.
