boring recounting of my time

boring recounting of my time

last night: baroque ensemble concert! the penn baroque ensemble played a lovely concert of music from venice and rome. there were two recorder ensemble pieces, several accompanied-by-harpsichord pieces, two singy pieces, and all was well. it reminded me of when i used to play the baroque cello (different from a regular cello by (a) having gut strings which completely fail to stay in tune ever, (b) having a wider neck which is set at a slightly more upright angle than a modern cello, (c) having a clunkier bow, and (d) having no end pin (the pole thingy that goes from the bottom of the cello to the floor) which means the cellist quickly develops Thighs Of Steel). our baroque ensemble, the collegium musicum, had somehow managed to acquire a very nice matched quartet of baroque stringed instruments, of which this cello was part. they were newly made, but made in the baroque style. it was great fun. though the cello was mostly relegated to playing the continuo part, which, as you will know if you've ever played a continuo instrument, is not exactly fireworks. the collegium musicum also had a set of sackbuts and crumhorns (you should definitely click on the .mp3 of the sound of the crumhorn).

tonight: philadelphia flower show!

today: grant. (though i did find out that my research proposal (the meat of the application) is a maximum of 10 pages. this is good because i had thought that it was to be a regular grant proposal/dissertation proposal, which is normally more like 50-100 pages, and i was going to be bummed about having to write that much).

yesterday: procrastinated by searching for new skins for my copy of winamp. i settled on this one, which reminds me of my parents stereo. what with the sexy silver case and the faces with *actual lamps* lighting them up. in honor of this reminder-of-home, i cued up all kinds of comfort music from my childhood: carole king, jane oliver, peter paul and mary, harry chapin, the mamas and the papas, the carpenters.

today: procrastinating by trying to download alanis morissette's new album off limewire. so far, i like it better than the last one, but don't know it well enough to say if i like it as much as the first one.
