in the world of fruit salad

so all around philadelphia, and especially around penn's campus, there are food trucks. you know, the kind that in most cities sell nothing more imaginative than hotdogs and soft pretzels. well, here in philly, truck food is an art. there's the hotdog/hoagie/cheesesteak/soft pretzel trucks, but there's also the chinese trucks, the falafel trucks, the japanese trucks (though i don't know about the wisdom of buying sushi from a truck), the thai trucks, magic carpet (a vegetarian truck, where my favorite is the bella donna: tofu meatballs in a tomato-based chunky vegetable sauce, served over brown rice, with hot sauce and cheese), mexicali (the mexican truck, where one can get a yummy sweet potato burrito for $2.50), george's lunch truck (where george always remembers you and what your favorite order is), the petit creperie (where the crepes are superyummy but the line is always really really long), and the ubiquitous fruit salad trucks.

there's a fruit salad truck right across the street from where i usually work, but they are totally fruit salad taliban there what with all the rules. they offer a mixed fruit salad in 3 sizes, but if you pick and choose which fruits you want (and don't let them give you some of everything (watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, orange, grapes, pineapple, strawberries, kiwi) then they charge you an extra 25 cents. also, they sell baggies of either just grapes or grapes and strawberries for $1. if i go there, that's what i usually get. because i'm not such a fan of orange (because they leave the peel on) or honeydew (because theirs is never very good) or watermelon (because of all the seeds) in a fruit salad.

BUT, i discovered several weeks ago a fruit salad truck (actually, two, right next to each other) down by the hospital that is much friendlier. the fruit salad jordanian monarchy, if you will. there, one can purchase a small fruit salad, for 50 cents cheaper than at the fruit salad taliban, and can pick and choose whatever fruits one wants. AND, they have mango. also, the fruit salad jordanian monarchy has the dollar baggies with whatever kind of fruit you want, and they'll even make up one special for you with just cantaloupe (which, by the way, is one of the few foods that has both vitamin c and beta carotene) or just pineapple, or mango and strawberries. or whatever.

so next time you come to philly, get your fruit salad from the enlightened leaders of the fruit salad world.

oh, and people, on the guestmap, you CAN use the blown-up version of the united states, in order to more precisely place yourself. if you want. just didn't want you to think it was off-limits or anything.
