depeche mode

urg. i don't know why i'm doing this, but i'm still awake, on the 'puter. i just got myself hooked up with a guestbook (i've sorta been meaning to do this, but have been a bit timid because i didn't want to be crushed when i only got one signature every [editor: insert suitably long period of time here]), and have been eating slices of bread spread with mayo (how gross is THAT? even grosser if you know that i ate half a loaf that way. ick. man, if i were bulimic, now would be the time.). leno's on the tube, though i'm not actually watching. couldn't even say who the guests were, except for the musical guest, depeche mode.

in junior high and high school, i was really into depeche mode. i was a little goth girl--entire wardrobe of black, black nails and lips, lots of black eyeliner. doc martens were a frequent topic of conversation. you know. i even shaved part of my head for a while. left long long hair on the top, shaved from the tops of my ears down. whatever. it was way too much work to keep up even until graduation.

anyway, i haven't listened to dm much at all since then--the occasional song on the radio, or an old mix tape (gawd, remember mix TAPES?? i don't even know where my tape collection IS anymore.) but i'll still pay attention to e-news (entertainment, not electronic) items about them. i hadn't seen them perform since high school, so was interested to see what had happened to them between then and now. i knew about the drugs, followed by the recovery, followed by the happy marriages. blah blah blah. SOOOOO uninteresting.

my impressions of them now: dave gahan looks old. i don't know how old he is (about 40, i'm thinking?), but he looks baaad. he was wearing a green tee over tight black tuxedo pants. dave gahan always looked good in tight pants, and tonight was no exception. he's a better dancer than he was. a tiny bit in the direction of beck, who is a *fabulous* dancer. martin gore, the soul of dm in my opinion, looks pretty much unchanged. same short curly blonde hair. he's still wearing silly clothes (his shirt tonight had feathers sticking up from his right shoulder. i think they were feathers...) and still wearing raccoonish black eyeliner (bless his heart). man, i had such a CRUSH on him when i was fifteen. back then, i LOVED a man in eyeliner. doesn't do much for me anymore except for a bubble of nostalgia.

the song didn't do much for me. 'course, i haven't like their stuff since music for the masses. and they had back-up dancers. umm, hello? depeche mode with back-up dancers? when did i blast off from earth and land on planet wrongwrongWRONG?
