lessee. i was watching that show "blind date" the other day (love that show! the people are sometimes so unbelievable) and noticed their web site. so i surfed on over, and starting reading the personals. most of the ads for men seeking women are the usual crap: "i know how to show my woman a good time, with candlelight dinners and smooth jazz... let me show u what a real man is... i'm looking to share my lovin with a woman who appreciates a good man..." blech. one ad caught my eye--27 y.o., grad degree, moved here from calif. and is looking for new friends. fabulous! i wrote him. his name is ryan, and maybe i'll actually meet someone who isn't attached to penn! what a concept!

i'm playing on the penn neuroscience/psychology summer softball team. it's a super-non-competitive league, so it's just perfect. we, as a bunch of nerds, have named ourselves Psi Jung. heh heh. this is also an attempt to meet new people, though of course all these people will be penn grad students.

schedule for this week:
monday: summer workshop banquet
tuesday: softball game
wednesday: softball game
thursday: end-of-year cheese at felicia's
friday: stoop-sittin'
saturday: ???
sunday: changing of the guard party at ginny's (from seyfarth to derubeis)
quite a full week, it's turning out to be.

on friday night, laura and her kids and i went to the wayne public library's used book sale. it was the best used book sale i've ever been to! i can see why she goes every year! they had three *big* rooms of books. and good books, too. i bought a whole beer-case-box full of books for $21.75. it was fabulous. new acquisitions include:

  • foundation, second foundation, and short science fiction tales by isaac asimov
  • the grapes of wrath and the winter of our discontent by john steinbeck
  • fahrenheit 451, dandelion wine, and the illustrated man by ray bradbury
  • the woman warrior by maxine hong kingston
  • grendel by john gardner
  • fall of hyperion by dan simmons
  • the golden compass by philip pullman

  • moo by jane smiley

john came up on saturday afternoon. we went to see moulin rouge with nicole kidman and ewan mcgregor. it was very good, i thought. an outlandish musical, set in paris in 1899, but with modern music. the incorporation of phrases and whole songs from modern pop music into a funny and *beautifully filmed* opera-quality storyline (think mel-o-dram-a-tic) was great! very clever. not for a single moment did i forget i was watching a film, but that was just fine. saturday evening we went to warmdaddy's (front and market streets in old city, philadelphia) for blues and new orleans style food. the food was good, and the music was okay (though for a blues musician, michael burks was surprisingly uncharismatic), but the whole package was just a little too fancy. maybe i've got a bad stereotype, but i think blues clubs should have more of a hole-in-the-wall feeling than warmdaddy's does (which it doesn't *at all*). but whaddarya gonna do? we had to try it. we came home to find the new jersey devils had won their game against the colorado avalanche, making it a 2-2 series. watched saturday night live (a repeat, hosted by dana carvey), and went to bed. had some pretty good sex, though i find that lately he takes too long to come--by the time he's ready to come, i'm starting to get sore. also, and maybe this is a good thing, because it's so rare that i actually have sex nowadays, i'm *really* tight at the beginning, which makes penetration just the slightest bit uncomfortable. ah well. i should be happy to be getting any at all, what with not having a boyfriend and all.

'kay. that's enough for now.
