wild living

for the better part of the last week, laura and i have been going out every night, drinking and making merry. this routine climaxed this weekend. but first: so on friday we decided we should go out somewhere for drinks and men. we headed downtown to the paradigm. drinks there were quite yummy (i had a mango tangerine raspberry cosmopolitan) but very expensive ($8 per (small) drink). so, after that one drink we were off to cheaper pastures.

we ended up at cafe spice, which we had passed the previous night, but has passed by because it was empty. friday it was packed full of yummy indian men, so we went in. we made our way to the bar, with laura drooling over all the dark-skinned hunks, and ordered drinks from the (5m) bartender, ray. [i should pause here to explain the 'm' scale: you know when you see someone quite attractive, who makes your head turn, and you say something like "mm mm mmm". well, we decided that there should be a scale, ranging from one 'm' to seven 'm's, to rate people. there are only odd numbers (1,3,5,7) because even 'mmm's sound weird (try it). there's not more than 7 because that's just too many.] so, we ordered drinks from ray. laura said "surprise me" and got a sex on the beach. it was a hot and sticky night, and definitely good for a fruity drink. ray only charged us $5 for the two drinks, so we of course gave him a big tip. after another round of drinks from ray, the bars closed, and we were out in the street. laura had managed to pick up an indian guy named asit (sp?), nicknamed sunny (??). as they kissed on the street, i had a nice conversation with the parking attendant. learned all i ever wanted to about valet parking.

on saturday night, we had tickets to a multimedia production of the opera "pagliacci". it was lovely. the singer playing nedda was fabulous, a really clear, full voice. Tonio was really good, too. canio was not so hot, kindof a weak voice. oh well. it wasn't as multimedia as i expected--just some video screens in the back projecting various images in place of a set. after the show, we went back to our friend daniel's house (he is an opera singer) to debrief. we sat on the roof listening to franco corelli singing canio, drinking, and eating fine cheese.

after having several drinks, and not yet being drunk, we decided it would be a good idea just to do shots. laura and i did shots of absolute, and daniel went right for his roommates scotch. at the end of the evening (morning, really), laura and i had finished a brand new bottle of absolute (750 mL) and daniel had polished off almost a fifth of scotch. we were mighty drunk. laura at some point used the phrase "bite me". so i did, and this set off a chain of biting that has left laura with quite a bruised arm. things got more personal, yada yada yada, and i ended up leaving at 5 pm the next day (~18 hours after i got there).

did a stupid thing, and am now having to suffer the consequences of emergency post-coital contraception. for those of you who don't know what this is or what it does: you take a massive dose of birth control pills, and it delays ovulation for several days, and makes the lining of the uterus inhospitable. all very well and good except that it also makes you throw up repeatedly. yeah, lots of fun.

so that's my plan for tonight.

tomorrow night i plan to spend quietly at my house, reading and playing the cello. two activities that i have not done enough of recently. then on wednesday, i'm having dinner and a movie with john, then heading to my mom's house to prepare for our trip to north dakota for a family reunion. quite a week.
